White Christmas in the Midlands
It may not have been a white Christmas in the Midlands but Mother Nature has ushered in 2010 with snow. In Birmingham over 200 schools have been closed & all schools in Solihull were closed in the week due to the weather. This is the first snow for many children & the streets have been transformed into playgrounds for building snowmen, sledding & snowball fights.
For this reason, as well as the icy road conditions, it is more important than ever to drive carefully giving your full attention to the roads.
The following are a few tips to keep you & your loved ones safe on the roads this winter:
1. Remove Snow:
If your car has snow piled on the roof use a broom to clear the excess snow off. This will prevent clumps of snow from sliding off & making the road more dangerous for drivers behind you.
2. Slow down:
Driving slowly & smoothly will help you stay in control of your vehicle. Leave plenty of space between your car & the car in front. Avoid sudden braking by anticipating stops.
3. Check fluids:
It is a good idea to keep your petrol tank full. This will give your vehicle extra weight giving you better traction on icy roads. It is also a good idea to check the levels of fluids before travelling in winter weather. Motor oil, antifreeze & washer fluid are all quick & easy to check & replace. Remember when purchasing washer fluid & antifreeze that cheaper brands may freeze faster than specialist brands. Both male & female drivers should be familiar with their vehicles’ engine. Instructors & lessons in simple car maintenance can be easily found online. It is also important to have your vehicle regularly serviced.
4. Pack supplies:
You should carry supplies in your car at all times of the year. During winter months it is especially important to carry a warm blanket, water, food & a mobile phone car charger, especially if you are travelling with small children.
What should you do if you start to skid?
- Do not panic
- Do not brake
- Take your foot off the accelerator and steer your vehicle in the direction you want it to go
- If you are driving an automatic transmission, shift into neutral
- If you are driving a manual transmission, declutch
Limit your driving to trips that are necessary. If you need to go out but feel you do not have the confidence to drive in wintery conditions call a reputable taxi firm and ask for an experienced driver.
